Golf Course Designer Robert Trent Jones Lunches with China's President

(PALO ALTO, CA) -- Golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. was the lone attendee from the U.S. golf industry among the special invitees of business leaders and statesmen at a luncheon for Chinese President Hu Jintao in Washington, D.C. last week (January 20, 2011). This was President Hu's only event for the business community in Washington during his state visit to meet with President Obama.

The event was hosted in partnership with the National Committee on U.S. Relations and the U.S.-China Business Council and in cooperation with nine other organizations.

Jones is no stranger to international relations as his firm, Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects (RTJ II) has been designing courses in China for more than two decades. Four of their seven Chinese courses - Spring City, Harbour Plaza, Trans Strait, and Yalong Bay - have been ranked by Golf Digest as among the top ten courses in China. This success not only speaks to the skills of the RTJ II design team but to the fact that the company is culturally agile, and able to adapt to the particular climates - political, social, and/or geographic - that they work in around the globe.

Coincidentally, Jones has a long history with China. He first visited China at the invitation of Deng Xiaoping, the paramount leader of the People's Republic of China (1978 to 1992) after being introduced to him in Seattle by President Carter in 1979. The President made a point of asking Deng why there were no golf courses in China and three years later Jones was invited to help design a course in Shanghai.

Creators of more than 270 courses in more than 40 countries, in 2011 RTJ II will continue to deliver great new golf layouts near and far around the world. The firm will be working in Belize, California, Canada, China, England, Greece, Hawaii, India, Italy, New Zealand, Oregon, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Russia, Texas, and Vanuatu.

With headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif., Robert Trent Jones II, Golf Course Architects (RTJ II) is the preeminent golf design firm worldwide. Trustees of a great tradition of golf course architecture, RTJ II is committed to working in harmony with nature to craft the best golf course on each unique site. The RTJ II design team has experience in every aspect of golf course development and the ability to provide support and expertise from conception through completion of any project.
