(DUBAI, U.A.E.) -- Residents in Nakheel's communities turned off the lights during Earth Hour Saturday after being encouraged by the developer.

People living in Palm Jumeirah, The Gardens, Jumeirah Islands, International City, and Discovery Gardens were notified earlier by Nakheel to save energy for the one hour to show solidarity with the worldwide energy reduction movement.

Chris O'Donnell, Nakheel's CEO, said, "As one of Dubai's most recognized developers, we seek to demonstrate leadership in all areas of sustainability.   Earth Hour is an excellent initiative to create awareness of the small steps both organizations and individuals can take to be more environmentally responsible."

Lights out saved 7500 kilowatts of energy, according to O'Donnell.  Participating in Earth Hour was the end of a week of attempts at energy saving for the Dubai developer.

Nakheel joined the UAE's Make the Switch initiative to introduce one million energy efficient light bulbs into local homes, replacing incandescent bulbs.

Nakheel also participated in International Water Week to encourage residents and staff to save water. Water saving devices including tap aerators were sold and installed in apartments and villas in Nakheel communities.

If all taps in the communities used the aerators, more than 7,000 liters of water could be saved every year.
