Aldar today launched a programme of exciting cultural weekends at the Souk at Central Market, the new destination to be discovered at the heart of Abu Dhabi.
Starting this weekend, the unique atmosphere of the Souk will play host to a variety of free cultural events covering music and dance, arts and crafts, fashion, as well as film and food tasting. Mirroring the style of the Souk, these events will feature a blend of traditional and contemporary arts and will feature live shows, exhibitions and a range of interactive activities for the entire family.
The Souk at Central Market area holds a special place in the history of Abu Dhabi. In the early 1960s, when the capital began to flourish and grow, the city centre became home to a large commercial souk. For over 40 years, it has been a focal point for both citizens and tourists, and the hub of trade where merchants from the UAE and beyond would gather to bargain for wares from across the Gulf.
Now, recreated as an airy, light space that fuses Arabian heritage with modern twists, The Souk always presents new discoveries. With 250 stores and nearly 20 cafes and restaurants set across three levels, The Souk is the place to go for watches and jewellery, perfumes, gifts, spices and electronics; a modern day market in traditional, yet thoroughly modern surroundings.
Mohammed Abdullah Al Zaabi, Director of Estates at Aldar said, "I am delighted to launch this exciting programme of events to be held in the Souk at Central Market. This unique destination is the perfect location to discover and learn about traditional and contemporary Arabic culture and we look forward to welcoming visitors of all ages over the next four weekends."
