STR Reports Global Hotel Construction Pipeline for July

According to the July 2011 STR Construction Pipeline Report, the global hotel construction pipeline showed slowing in some regions, while growth in others.

Caribbean/Mexico

The Caribbean/Mexico hotel development pipeline comprises 125 hotels totaling 18,709 rooms.

Among the countries in the region, Haiti reported the largest expected growth (29.4 percent) if all 492 rooms in the total active pipeline open. Five other countries reported expected growth of more than 5 percent: Anguilla (+28.8 percent with 220 rooms); St. Kitts/Nevis (+11.7 percent with 235 rooms); Turks & Caicos (+10.6 percent with 327 rooms); the Bahamas (+9.8 percent with 1,604 rooms); and St. Lucia (+5.6 percent with 245 rooms).



Central/South America

The Central/South America hotel development pipeline comprises 170 hotels totaling 27,457 rooms.

As of 30 June 2011, 12 projects have opened in the region with 1,711 rooms. There are 34 more projects expected to open in the remainder of 2011 with 6,338 rooms. In 2012, there are 42 projects scheduled to open with 6,741 rooms.

Among the Chain Scale segments, the upscale segment is expected to open the largest number of rooms for the remainder of 2011 with 2,226 rooms among 13 projects. The segment is also expecting to open the largest number of rooms in 2012 with 2,118 rooms among 12 projects. The Upper Upscale segment (1,744 rooms among two projects) and the Midscale segment (1,444 rooms among 10 projects) also are expected to open a significant number of rooms in 2011.



Europe

The Europe hotel development pipeline comprises 800 hotels totaling 130,260 rooms.

Among the key markets in the region, London, United Kingdom, ended the month with the largest number of rooms under construction with 4,506 rooms (of the 9,918 rooms in the market's total active pipeline). Other markets to report a significant number of rooms under construction: Istanbul, Turkey (2,438 rooms); Stockholm, Sweden (1,706 rooms); Berlin, Germany (1,436 rooms); and Manchester, U.K. (1,431 rooms).



Asia / Pacific

The Asia/Pacific hotel development pipeline comprises 1,244 hotels totaling 306,537 rooms.

Among the region's countries, China ended the month with the largest number of rooms in the In Construction phase with 120,298 rooms. Four other countries reported more than 5,000 rooms under construction: India (29,127 rooms); Thailand (9,182 rooms); Vietnam (8,554 rooms); and Indonesia



Middle East/Africa

The Middle East/Africa hotel development pipeline comprises 460 hotels totaling 125,268 rooms.

Among the countries in the region, Qatar ended the month with the largest expected room growth (+78.3 percent) if all 6,604 rooms in the total active pipeline open. Other countries to report significant expected room growth: Oman (+57.9 percent with 3,734 rooms); United Arab Emirates (+55.7 percent with 48,071 rooms); Bahrain (+49 percent with 3,155 rooms); and Algeria (+47.9 percent with 1,619 rooms).
