Water enthusiasts have a new beachfront resort to enjoy in Texas.

Located in the popular tourist destination of South Padre Island, the new upscale Schlitterbahn Beach Resort is highlighted by a new year-round indoor waterpark. The newest resort adds to Schlitterbahn Waterparks' growing portfolio of impressive waterpark-themed resorts in Texas and Kansas.

Located on the pristine beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, Schlitterbahn's new 221-room beachfront resort includes lodging, family suites, numerous dining options and unlimited use of both the resort's indoor and outdoor waterpark.

Overall, the new indoor waterpark features two large 70-foot-tall intimidating tube slides, two adventurous tidal wave rivers (the industry's first double tidal wave river), a kids' area with several slides, a giant heated pool with swim-up refreshments, a beachfront pool, several wild-wave beaches and the grand carousel.

As part of Schlitterbahn's ongoing commitment to the environment, many wooden structures in the park, and much of the furnishings in the hotel (nightstands in the guest rooms), are made from wood reclaimed after the devastating forest fires near Bastrop. Much of these salvaged trees are loblolly pines from the "Lost Pines" region.

Family-owned and operated, Schlitterbahn Waterparks has been a leader in family-friendly water-based entertainment since 1979.  The company operates three waterparks in Texas and one in Kansas.

Schlitterbahn, which means "slippery road" in German, first opened in 1979 with four water slides starting from a German-style tower in New Braunfels, Tex. The tower was patterned after the Bergfried Guard Tower at Solms Castle in Braunfels, Germany - home of the original settlers of New Braunfels.

The Henry family built the tower and the slides on a hill next to their riverfront resort called Landa Resort. Schlitterbahn was an early pioneer in promoting the waterpark resort concept which is now popular around the world.

Today Schlitterbahn New Braunfels Waterpark Resort, ranked the No. 1 waterpark in the world for 14 consecutive years, has 164 accommodations on or adjacent to the park grounds.

A recent addition to the New Braunfels property was Treehaus Luxury Suites. The new upscale lodging experience is nestled on the banks of the spring-fed Comal River, where guests enjoy awesome tree-top views from the comfort of 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom units.

Another well-known Schlitterbahn development is Schlitterbahn Vacation Village in Kansas City, Kan., where the company undertook a $750 million trend-setting retail entertainment destination comprised of multiple shopping, dining, lodging and entertainment venues connected by a Transportainment River System. In the Vacation Village, manmade rivers carry guests between lodging units and a large summertime water resort and a covered riverwalk with shops and restaurants.
